The Great Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow Remake Conspiracy

Ok, after taking some time to explore the Pokemon Yellow, Red, and Blue remakes set to release on February 27th, I think I may have stumbled upon a hidden reason for these reboots...

I think Nintendo wants to shut down more ROM sharing sites.

It's a well-known fact that Nintendo isn't exactly friendly when it comes to others using and profiting from their intellectual property. Just look at how they gouge YouTubers that create Nintendo related content. Sure, it's their property, they own it, and they have all those associated rights. Legally, they can do everything that they do, some would even argue that they should do what they do.

One of the places where they have attempted to exercise their rights is in the ROM and fan made game communities. For example, there was a popular ROM site called CoolRom that was forced to remove all of their Nintendo related content a couple of years ago. We've seen several fan-made games get started, provide some really neat aspect or mechanic to the game, and then get shut down by Nintendo. It's been really tragic, to be honest.

There are still many sites and developers out there that are creating this content and hosting these ROMs. No one from the community said really seems to mind. The IPs are old, no longer available on the market, and many of us retain our original cartridges, even though they are no longer playable. We look at it and say that we've purchased these games already and Nintendo isn't providing us with a way to continue playing them. They're not losing any money by me downloading a ROM version of a game that I already own. And Nintendo really can't argue with that. They don't really win anything by challenging these websites and forcing them to take down Nintendo content - aside from looking bad to the public.

Now, with these games coming back to the market, in almost the exact same state that they were released in 20 years ago, they can claim damages and losses due to these ROMs and their associated websites. They have a much stronger legal reason to go after them, not to mention the potential to sue them for any lost revenue  - given that the games are now available again for purchase and ROMS would represent a direct loss for the company.

I am very curious to hear what you all think. Am I just being paranoid? Or could there really be a hidden motive behind these releases?
